You've often seen this symbol, you vaguely know what it means... But do you know the real meaning of Yin and Yang?
Yin and Yang is also known as Tai Chi, The Ultimate Supreme or the Great Art. The symbol represents the two fundamental principles of Chinese philosophy.
Complementary, they represent the two extremes of a whole and coexist together.
According to Taoist principles, the forces of everything that exists in the universe are in constant motion. As the movement continues, each of the forces gradually transforms into the other, from Yin to Yang and vice versa.
The Circle
The outer circle represents the "whole," that is, the universe and everything it contains. It encompasses the duality of all that exists, harmony and balance within the universe.
The black and white shapes within the circle represent the interaction of two opposing energies, called "Yin" (black) and "Yang" (white). Combined, these forces are the origin of everything that happens in our world.
The "S" shape of the black and white sections of the symbol itself symbolizes the continuous movement of these two energies. The two parts mutually share space, completing each other in an endless cycle.

The Two Dots in Yin and Yang
You will notice, however, the two dots inside the shapes, one black in the white part and vice versa. They are there to remind us that in the universe as in life, nothing is ever absolute (either all black or all white).
Indeed, within each of the opposing forces there is a small part of the other. In every Yin there is Yang and in every Yang there is Yin.
This is true for everything in the universe: for example, in every woman one can find some masculinity and in every good thing there is a little bad.
In short, each thing needs its opposite and each needs the other to exist!
